Part 3: Once You're Inside | Why Getting Through the Door Is Only Half the Battle

Getting through the door is only the beginning.
A lot of buildings put their accessibility efforts into the entrance and stop there. Ramp at the front, accessible parking space in the lot, and the assumption that the rest will work itself out. But for wheelchair users, people with mobility aids, people with chronic illness, and people with disabilities that affect how they navigate and experience physical space, what happens once they are inside matters just as much as whether they could get in at all.
I have navigated enough stores, restaurants, churches, and public spaces from a wheelchair to know that the inside of a building can be just as inaccessible as a building with no ramp at all. Sometimes more so, because at least a building with no ramp is an obvious problem. The barriers inside are often invisible to people who have never had to think about them.
This post covers what those barriers actually look like and what to do about them, across the full range of budget and building size.
Furniture layout and aisle width
This is one of the most common and most fixable problems inside commercial spaces, and it is getting worse, not better.
The ADA requires a minimum clear floor width of 36 inches for accessible routes, with 44 inches preferred in high traffic areas and 60 inches required for two wheelchair users to pass each other. In practice, a lot of retail spaces, restaurants, and churches fall well short of that, not because of the permanent architecture but because of how furniture, displays, and merchandise are arranged.
Walmart is a useful example here because most people have been in one and most people have noticed it getting harder to navigate. Temporary display units, seasonal merchandise stacks, and promotional fixtures placed in main aisles have made what should be wide accessible routes into obstacle courses. If you cannot comfortably get a shopping cart through an aisle, a wheelchair user cannot get through either. Neither can someone on a mobility scooter, a parent with a stroller, or an older adult with a walker. This is not a disability specific problem. It is an everyone problem that happens to affect disabled people first and most severely.
For small businesses and churches, the solution often costs nothing. It is a layout decision. Walk your space and ask whether someone in a wheelchair could navigate every area you want customers or congregants to access. Better yet, ask someone who actually uses a wheelchair or a mobility aid to walk it with you. Get your community involved. The people who experience these barriers every day are the most qualified to tell you where the problems are, and most of them will appreciate being asked. Move furniture, reposition displays, create clear routes between areas. If you are not sure whether your aisles meet the minimum width, a tape measure will tell you in about ten minutes or less.
For retail spaces with clothing racks, this deserves specific attention. Racks that are too close together force wheelchair users to push through them, which causes items to fall, creates a mess, and is frankly embarrassing for the customer who is just trying to shop. Beyond the accessibility issue, items falling off racks is a liability and a loss prevention problem.
Spacing racks a minimum of 36 inches apart meets the technical requirement, but in practice it is often not enough. Most custom and power wheelchairs are wider than a standard manual chair, and 36 inches leaves little to no clearance for someone to navigate without catching items on the way through. The more realistic and functional target is 42 inches between racks. Yes, that reduces the number of racks you can fit in a space and affects how much you can display. But it also means more customers can actually shop your floor without knocking merchandise down, which reduces product loss, reduces the liability of items on the floor, and keeps the experience from being embarrassing for the customer who is just trying to browse. More accessible floor space means more customers who can use it. That is a business case, not just an accessibility one.
Permanent fixtures and built in shelving are a different conversation. If your layout truly cannot accommodate accessible routes without significant renovation, that is worth a consultation with an interior designer or accessibility consultant who can help you find solutions within your existing footprint.
Floor surfaces
Floor surfaces are one of those things that most people never think about until they are the person for whom the floor is a problem.
Thick carpet is one of the most common barriers inside buildings. It creates significant resistance for wheelchair users and people using rollators or walkers, requiring substantially more effort to push through than a hard surface. It also creates instability for people with balance issues or lower limb weakness. If you have thick pile carpet in public areas of your building, replacing it with low pile carpet, carpet tile, or a hard surface like luxury vinyl plank is one of the most impactful interior accessibility upgrades you can make. Low pile carpet with a firm pad is the minimum standard for accessible carpeted surfaces.
Loose rugs and area rugs are a trip hazard for everyone and a navigation barrier for wheelchair users and people with mobility aids. The edges catch wheels, the surface shifts underfoot, and they bunch up in ways that create uneven surfaces. If you have loose rugs in public areas, remove them or replace them with non slip secured alternatives. This is a free fix that also reduces your liability exposure.
Floor transitions between different surface types, carpet to tile, wood to vinyl, interior to exterior, create raised edges that catch wheels and trip people. Transition strips should be flush or beveled to no more than a quarter inch height difference. This is a low cost fix, typically under $20 in materials, that makes a significant difference for anyone using a wheeled mobility device.
Wet floors are a particular hazard in bathrooms, kitchens, and entryways. Non slip flooring or non slip treatments applied to existing surfaces reduce fall risk for everyone. Products like SlipDoctors and SurGrip make non slip treatments that can be applied to existing tile and hard surfaces without replacement. These run roughly $20 to $80 depending on the area size.
Seating options
This one is about dignity as much as accessibility.
A lot of spaces offer one type of seating and assume it works for everyone. Fixed chairs, pews, booths, or standard dining chairs arranged around tables. For wheelchair users, people with chronic pain, people with mobility limitations, and people with conditions that affect how long they can sit or in what position, that assumption excludes a significant number of people.
For wheelchair users specifically, the ability to sit alongside other people at a table rather than being parked at the end of it matters. It sounds like a small thing. It is not. Being able to sit with your family or your community at a shared table rather than being positioned separately is a basic part of feeling like you belong in a space.
Practically, this means ensuring that at least some tables in your space have knee clearance underneath for a wheelchair user to pull up to, rather than a base or pedestal that blocks access. The ADA requires a minimum knee clearance of 27 inches high, 30 inches wide, and 19 inches deep for accessible tables. Pedestal tables and tables with four corner legs generally work. Trestle tables and tables with center bases often do not.
For churches with fixed pews, creating accessible seating areas that are integrated into the main seating rather than relegated to the back or the side matters. Nobody wants to sit in the accessibility ghetto at the edge of the room while everyone else sits together.
For businesses and venues with multiple seating types, offering a range of chair heights, chairs with and without arms, and at least some seating with back support gives people the ability to choose what works for their body. This benefits not just disabled people but older adults, pregnant people, and anyone who has ever sat in an uncomfortable chair for too long.
Accessible changing rooms
This is one of the most commonly overlooked accessibility failures in small retail spaces, and it is one that directly affects whether a disabled person can shop independently.
A standard changing room is often too small for a wheelchair to enter, let alone turn around in. The ADA requires accessible dressing rooms to have a minimum turning radius of 60 inches, a bench that is 24 inches deep and 18 inches from the floor, and a hook no higher than 48 inches from the floor. Many small boutiques and independent retailers have changing rooms that meet none of those requirements.
For small businesses with limited space, retrofitting an existing changing room is not always simple. But it is worth assessing what is possible. In some cases, a larger fitting room can be created by combining two smaller ones. In others, a curtained area with more space can serve as an accessible option. The key is having at least one option that actually works for a wheelchair user, because without it, a disabled customer cannot try anything on, which means they are less likely to buy and less likely to come back.
Hooks, mirrors, and seating inside changing rooms should also be at accessible heights. A mirror that only shows from the waist up does not work for a seated person. A hook at 6 feet does not work for anyone who cannot reach that high. These are inexpensive fixes that make a real difference.
Accessible bathrooms
If your bathroom is not accessible, a significant portion of your potential customers, congregants, or tenants cannot stay in your space for any length of time. It is that simple.
This is one of the most common complaints I hear from other wheelchair users and people with mobility aids, and it is one of the most common failures I see in small businesses and older buildings. Diners are a particular problem. Small restaurants in older buildings often have bathrooms that have not been updated since before the ADA existed, with narrow doorways, no grab bars, no turning radius, and no accessible stall.
The full requirements for an accessible single occupancy bathroom are detailed in the 2010 ADA Standards, which you can access at the link in Part 1 of this series. But the basics include a minimum 60 inch turning diameter, grab bars on the side and rear walls of the toilet, a toilet height between 17 and 19 inches from the floor, a door that swings out or is a sliding door rather than swinging in, and a sink with knee clearance underneath and lever faucet hardware.
For small businesses in older buildings, full bathroom renovation is not always immediately feasible. But there are incremental improvements worth making:
Grab bars are one of the highest impact low cost additions available. A basic grab bar runs $20 to $80 depending on length and finish. Installation requires locating wall studs or using appropriate wall anchors rated for the load, and a handyman can typically install a set of grab bars in under two hours. Brands like Moen, Delta, and Wingits make grab bars across a range of price points. Do not install a grab bar without proper wall support. It needs to hold the full weight of a person using it for support.
Lever faucets apply here as well. Replace knob faucets with lever or sensor faucets. Touchless sensor faucets, which run $30 to $150 for residential models and higher for commercial grade, are worth considering for public bathrooms as they eliminate the need to grip or turn anything entirely.
Toilet height matters more than most people realize. A standard toilet sits at 15 inches, which is too low for many people with mobility limitations, chronic pain, or lower limb weakness. A raised toilet seat, which costs $20 to $60 and requires no installation beyond placing it on the existing toilet, can bring the seat height into the accessible range. For a more permanent solution, comfort height toilets sit at 17 to 19 inches and are standard in most new construction.
Lighting, every room, every budget
Lighting is one of the most significant and most consistently underestimated accessibility factors inside any building. It affects safety, navigation, comfort, and the ability to read signage, find grab bars, assess floor surfaces, and move through a space with confidence. Poor lighting is a barrier for people with low vision, older adults, people with vestibular conditions, people with migraines, people with sensory sensitivities, and frankly most people trying to use a dim or harshly lit space.
The problems show up differently in different areas, and the solutions range from a $10 bulb swap to a full lighting redesign depending on your building size and budget.
Bathrooms: Dim lighting in bathrooms is a safety issue first and foremost. When you cannot see clearly, you cannot locate grab bars, assess the floor surface, or navigate safely. This is especially true in older buildings with single overhead fixtures that throw inadequate light and deep shadows. The minimum goal is consistent, even illumination at floor level with no dark corners. For small businesses, replacing a single dim overhead fixture with a brighter LED equivalent or adding plug in LED fixtures to supplement existing lighting is a low cost starting point. LED vanity strips, which run $20 to $60, can be added above or beside mirrors to dramatically improve visibility without any electrical work. Motion activated lighting ensures the light is always on when someone enters rather than relying on someone finding a switch in the dark.
Main areas and retail floors: Overhead fluorescent lighting that flickers or buzzes is one of the most common and most harmful lighting failures in commercial spaces. Flickering light triggers migraines, affects people with epilepsy, causes significant distress for many neurodivergent people, and creates a generally unpleasant environment for everyone. Replacing fluorescent tubes with LED equivalents is one of the best investments a building can make. LED tube replacements are direct swap compatible with most existing fluorescent fixtures, run $5 to $20 per tube, last significantly longer, do not flicker, do not buzz, and use less energy. For small businesses, this is a low cost high impact upgrade that pays for itself relatively quickly in energy savings alone.
High gloss floor surfaces create glare that affects people with low vision and makes it harder to distinguish floor level changes, obstacles, and transitions. If you have high gloss floors, a matte finish wax or coating can reduce glare without replacing the flooring. This is a low cost fix that improves safety and visual comfort.
Transition areas, stairwells, and hallways: These are the areas most commonly under lit in existing buildings and the areas where poor lighting creates the most significant safety risk. Someone who cannot clearly see a step edge, a floor transition, or a change in level is at genuine risk of a fall. Step edge lighting, which highlights the nosing of each stair, runs $5 to $20 per step for adhesive LED strip options and is one of the most effective fall prevention investments available. For hallways and transition areas, motion activated LED fixtures ensure consistent illumination without requiring someone to find and operate a switch.
Checkout counters and service areas: Task lighting at counters and service areas helps people read paperwork, see products, and interact with staff without straining. Under counter LED strips or adjustable task lamps run $20 to $80 and make a meaningful difference in spaces where detailed tasks happen.
Signage lighting: Signage that is not well lit is effectively inaccessible to people with low vision. Backlit signage, illuminated exit signs, and high contrast directional signage placed at both standing and seated eye level cover a wide range of needs. For smaller businesses, simply ensuring that existing signage is in a well lit area and uses high contrast colors, dark text on a light background or light text on a dark background, is a free fix that improves legibility for everyone.
Dimmers and switch types: This is where building size and budget start to matter in terms of what solutions are appropriate.
For small businesses and churches, replacing standard switches with rocker switches or large paddle switches is a low cost upgrade that is easier to operate for people with limited hand dexterity. These run $5 to $15 per switch and can be swapped by a handyman or an electrician in minutes. Adding dimmer switches to main area lighting allows the light level to be adjusted for different needs and times of day, which benefits people with light sensitivity, migraines, and sensory sensitivities. Basic dimmer switches run $15 to $40 each and are compatible with most LED fixtures.
For mid sized businesses with some facilities budget, occupancy sensor switches that turn lights on automatically when someone enters a room and off when the room is empty are worth considering for bathrooms, hallways, stairwells, and storage areas. These run $20 to $60 per switch, require no rewiring in most cases, and ensure that lighting is always available without requiring someone to locate and operate a switch.
For larger institutions, a full lighting audit by a licensed electrical contractor or a lighting designer is a worthwhile investment. A professional audit will identify where lighting levels fall below recommended standards, where glare and flicker are problems, and what the most cost effective path to improvement looks like across the whole building. Many utility companies offer free or subsidized energy audits that include lighting assessments. Search your utility provider's website for audit programs or contact them directly to ask what is available.
For all building sizes, the Disabled Access Credit and energy efficiency tax incentives can both apply to lighting upgrades depending on the specifics. Consult with your accountant or tax advisor about what qualifies in your situation.
Putting it together
The inside of your building is where people actually experience your space. Getting the entrance right matters, but if someone gets through the door and then cannot navigate your aisles, find a seat that works for them, use your bathroom, try on your products, or see clearly in any of those spaces, the entrance upgrade was only half the job.
Start with the free fixes. Walk your space and move what can be moved. Better yet, bring someone with a wheelchair or mobility aid and let them show you what you are missing. Clear the aisles. Remove the loose rugs. Replace flickering fluorescent tubes with LED equivalents. Assess your lighting in every room, not just the main area.
Then look at the low cost fixes. Grab bars in the bathroom. A raised toilet seat. Transition strips on floor changes. Dimmer switches. Rocker switches. Better bulbs everywhere that needs them.
Then start planning for the bigger investments. An accessible changing room. A bathroom renovation. A lighting audit. Seating options that include everyone.
None of this has to happen all at once. But all of it matters to the people it affects, every single time they try to use your space.
